As the Director of Media Communications and Spokesperson for the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney, Leland built strong relationships with members of the media.
Attorneys have ethical guidelines that limit discussion of client cases in the media; however, the media can be a powerful tool to raise public awareness of injustices and citizens who have had their rights violated. Leland offers effective and knowledgeable representation, along with the unique ability to engage with the media community when necessary.
In 2013, Leland was appointed to lead the newly formed Violent Crimes Unit in Jefferson County. By working with senior members of law enforcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, FBI, ATF, and LMPD, Leland developed strong relationships and gained insight into how cases are built and how potential targets are assessed.
In 2002, Leland began his legal career working for the Jefferson County Attorney, now Court of Appeals Judge Irv Maze. Leland handled a large caseload that included serious felony arraignments and preliminary hearings, drug possession and trafficking cases, child support matters, traffic offenses, no insurance violations, speeding and DUI cases, gun possession, warrant cases, domestic violence matters, paternity cases, and juvenile court proceedings.

Trial victories in two separate three-week jury trials for arson against a woman accused of burning down her St. Matthews business.

Secured the first jury trial murder conviction for a DUI-related death in Jefferson County in 15 years.

A nationally followed trial involving the death of a 15-year-old PRP football player during practice. This case changed the heat and water rules in youth sports across the country.

I obtained a guilty jury verdict, and the juvenile received a life sentence for capital murder. The life sentence was upheld on appeal by the Kentucky Supreme Court.
